Having an eating disorder becomes difficult to manage and is driven by the need to control weight, shape and eating. Anorexia nervosa tends to include extreme restriction of food intake and leads to significantly low weight. Bulimia nervosa can be characterised by compensatory behaviours like vomiting, laxatives and exercise. Anorexia Nervosa is a characterised by severe and prolonged restricted intake leading to extremely low body weight. For an individual with Anorexia Nervosa it's common that body weight and image are significantly associated with self worth. Individuals often have a distorted view of their body, believing they are over weight when they are significantly underweight. This perspective and the fear of weight gain can lead to further diet restrictions and excessive exercise to maintain weight control.
Bulimia Nervosa is characterised by recurring episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours. Binge eating consists of eating a considerably large amount of food in a relatively short amount of time, within a few hours. Compensatory behaviours are a way of attempting to control weight and body image, these behaviours can include vomiting, incorrect use of laxatives and diuretics and excessive exercise among others. People suffering with Bulimia Nervosa are often find that they can be secretive about their eating and compensatory behaviours which can lead to feelings of guilt and shame.
Binge Eating is an eating disorder characterised by episodes of binge eating, unlike Bulimia Nervosa people suffering from Binge Eating Disorder will not usually take part in compensatory behaviours. This often leads to sufferers of Binge Eating Disorder putting too much importance over their weight and shape, leading to strong feelings of shame and guilt.
