Take a deep breath and join us in exploring how focusing on the beauty and functionality of our bodies can bring about positive changes. 🌬️ Today I am going to suggest 3 simple ways to embrace your body and the positive experiences it can bring:
1. Shifting the Focus 👀
We’ve all heard about body exposure as a technique to tackle body image issues in eating disorders (ED). But what if we flipped the script and focused on the beauty, functionality, and tactile wonder of our bodies? That’s where Positive Body Experience comes in!
Instead of concentrating on perceived flaws, start noticing and appreciating what your body can do—like walking, dancing, or hugging loved ones.
Question to Ask Yourself: “How can I help myself, my teen or loved one, appreciate the amazing things their body can do?”
Practice Suggestion: Body Appreciation Journaling. Encourage yourself or your loved one to keep a journal where they write down three things they appreciate about their body each day. This could be anything from “I love my strong legs that let me run” to “I appreciate my eyes that let me see beautiful things.”
2. Benefits of Positive Body Experience 🌸
Using Positive Body Experience finds some seriously positive changes:
• Boosts Attitudinal Body Image: Helps individuals see their bodies in a more positive light.
• Reduces ED Behaviors: Lessens the frequency and severity of eating disorder behaviors.
• Eases Depressive Symptoms: Lightens the emotional burden and improves mood.
Someone, yourself or your teen, practicing Positive Body Experience might focus on the strength of their legs that allow them to run or the beauty of their smile. This shift in perspective can reduce the urge to engage in harmful behaviours and improve their overall mental health.
Question to Ask: “What positive attributes and functions of my body can I celebrate today?”
Practice Suggestion: Mirror Exercises can bring so much change, start by spending a few minutes each day in front of the mirror, focusing on different parts of the body and acknowledging their beauty and functionality. Say out loud, “I love my arms because they let me hug my friends” or “I appreciate my feet for taking me on adventures.”
3. The Bigger Picture 🌟
This study suggests that Positive Body Experience is a great intervention for turning negative body image into a positive one, especially for folks with anorexia, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. It’s all about embracing the beauty and functionality of our bodies!
Introducing daily affirmations about body functionality and beauty can be a simple yet effective practice. For instance, “I love my hands because they allow me to create beautiful art.”
Question to Ask: “How can I incorporate positive body affirmations into my daily routine?”
Practice Suggestion: Mindful Movement can let you move all that energy around and bring positive awareness. Engage in activities that make your body feel good and appreciated, like yoga, stretching, or dancing. Focus on how your body moves and feels rather than how it looks. Celebrate the strength and flexibility you have.
